Dr Lucas Derks on winning the NLP Lifetime Achievement Award in London, 2019

The work of Dr. Lucas Derks has become a backbone for therapists, coaches and change-workers all around the world. 

Winner of the prestigious Award for NLP in Research (2019) and nominated for a a Lifetime Contribution Award, the work of Lucas has created waves of exploration and innovation in the international NLP community. 

Born in Oosterbeek, the Netherlands, in November 1950, and currently residing in Holland, he is a social psychologist, researcher, artist, musician and author.

With a strong interest in visual arts, he taught drawing and painting at the ‘De Werkschuit’ Zeist/Bilthoven. He started investing his time in the study of Social Psychology in 1976, and earned his Master’s Degree in 1982. In March 1977, he became acquainted with the work of Richard Bandler and John Grinder, the co-creators of Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP).

Lucas completed his NLP Practitioner’s training at the New York Training Institute for NLP in 1983, and his Master Practitioner’s training at the Institute for Eclectic Psychology in Holland, in 1985.

From 1980-86, he was also working as a researcher for some of the biggest Dutch museums on the subject of Visitor Behaviour. Some of the museums he has worked with are Het Rijksmuseum; Het Centraal museum, Van Gogh museum, etc.

In 1986, he made the choice to devote himself fully to NLP and adjacent areas. He has worked as a freelance trainer at the Stichting voor Educatieve en Therapeutische Hypnose; SON Opleidingen BV te Eindhoven; Instituut voor Eclectische Psychologie and many other places in the Netherlands; Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Finland, Suriname, Poland, Serbia, Brazil, England, New Zealand, Poland, Greece, Croatia, Malta and Austria.

From 1993 onwards, he has been involved in the development of new methods of social systems. He has pioneered the development of The Social Panorama. Connecting NLP and Social Psychology has been his main pursuit over the last decade.

Dr. Lucas Derks is an avid writer, having published ten seminal books on Social Panorama, Mental Space Psychology and NLP. His books have been translated in 8 languages, and are used by international trainers. He regularly publishes information-rich blog-posts on his website in English, Dutch and German, which are accessible to people on various levels of learning.
